Membership Requirements

Jamaat Ibad Ar Rahman, Inc. has only one class of membership, which is open to any person whose belief is based on the Qur'an and the Sunnah. and according to the methodology of the People of the Sunnah and Jama'ah (i.e. the four main Islamic Schools of Jurisprudence: Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali), and other Muslims who base their understanding exclusively upon the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessing of Allah be upon him) and the Sunnah of the four (4) rightly-guided Khalifahs; Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman and 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with all of them).

Membership is by application and entitles each member a vote upon all matters submitted to the general body of members for a decision. All membership is approved by the Executive Committee.

Section Header: Organizational Structure

Jamaat Ibad Ar Rahman, Inc. is managed by a nine-member Board of Directors, who are elected by the general body of members. Board members are elected for three-year staggered terms with three board members elected annually. Officers of the corporation, which include a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, are elected annually by the Board of Directors. The Chairman and Vice Chairman must be members of the Board of Directors. Additional vice chairmans, assistant secretaries and treasurers can be elected as needed.

Standing committees of the corporation include the Nominating Committee, Finance Committee and Property Management Committee. Committee members are appointed by the Chairman. Ad hoc committees can be formed by the Board of Directors as needed.

A Short History

Jamaat Ibad Ar Rahman, Inc. received its charter from the state of North Carolina on February 9th 1981. Under Chapter 55A of the General Statutes, it became a nonprofit organization with the following major purposes:

  • To engage in the religious practices and beliefs of the Islamic faith through moral, educational, cultural and economic development of all members.
  • To provide an organization which will promote and support the Islamic Faith.
  • To engage in any type of business to enhance the economic status of the corporation for lawful and religious employment
The original incorporators for Jamaat Ibad Ar Rahman, Inc. were Amad Abd-Shakur, Talib Abdullah and Nazeeh Abdul-Hakeem.

Mission Statement

To establish, facilitate and encourage the practice of Islam in Durham and the surrounding area based on the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) according to the methodology of the Salaf Salih (the righteous predecessor) by: Providing a place of worship; Enjoining good and forbidding evil; Educating the Muslims; Propagating Islam to the general community; and Promoting the social, economic and moral well - being of the Muslims.

Noteworthy dates

  • 1981 - Jamaat Ibad Ar Rahman, Inc. received its state charter and federal and state tax-exempt status.
  • 1983 - Masjid Ibad Ar Rahman was opened on Roxboro Street.
  • 1986 - 23 Acres of land was obtained for future use. 15 Acres remain as an alternative site for a new Masjid.
  • 1988 - Existing building was purchased.
  • 1989 - Masjid was opened in new building. The Athaan was called from loudspeakers on top of the building and is still called today.
  • 1990 - Ibad Ar Rahman School was opened. It has been the longest operating Muslim school in North Carolina and has high school graduates.

Section Header: Services Offered

I. Salaatul Jumu'ah

Jumu'ah is held from 1:00pm - 1:45pm every Friday.The khutbah is given in english by the Imam. Lunch is available for sale after the Salaat, except during the month of Ramadan. It is advised that you carpool to the Masjid since parking is limited. You cannot park in the Food Lion lot next to the Masjid.

II. Education

The Masjid makes every attempt to offer weekend Halaqas to increase your knowledge of the Deen. During the summer time there is generally a weekend Halaqa given between Maghrib and Ishaa while in the winter it is offered after Salaatul Ishaa. Please consult the front page of our site to see the current Halaqa schedule.

In addition, Sunday classes are offered for the children in topics ranging from basic Islamic knowledge to Qur'anic recitation to Seerah studies. Please consult our school page for more information.

III. Social/Religious Activities

The Masjid offers a number of social and religious activities beyond those previously mentioned. In addition to Niqahs, Waleemahs, weekend lunches and dinners, Ibad Ar Rahman sponsors a full schedule of activities during the month of Ramadan. The organization of these activities vary from year to year. Consult our events calendar for more information.

IV. Youth Activities

Periodically the Masjid offers activities for the kids. The intention of these activities is to foster a communal brotherhood between the children while maintaining Islamic adab. All events are supervised by parents and chaperons. Past events have included itikaf during Ramadan, lake outings, fundraisers, and trips to amusement parks. We also have a full fenced-in playground and volleyball court on the Masjid property that is open during the five daily prayers and on the weekends.

V. Notary Services

As part of our attempt at helping Muslims live an Islamic lifestyle in the United Stated, we are pleased to offer free Notary services for Islamic Wills. Please see Br. Hisham Heda for Notary services. Please note that the person signing the document MUST be present with a photo ID to get the document notorized. There are NO exceptions.
